Working for the Common Good

From the FLN Magazine - Vol. 1 / Issue 2

No act is too small or insignificant

In 1994, a twelve year old boy from Ontario called Craig Kielburger, was shocked by a newspaper story about the murder of a young Pakistani boy, who was killed for crusading against child labor in his native country. Who Speaks for Islam

From the FLN Magazine - Vol. 1 / Issue 2

Washington, DC - Extremists and terrorism have too often monopolised the media's coverage and thus the message coming out of the Muslim world. But what do the vast majority of mainstream Muslims really believe, think, and feel? What are their hopes, fears, and resentments? A child is considered as such until he/she hits puberty, after which he/she is considered a young adult.

As a Muslim woman, I have never felt oppressed by Islam. I believe that Allah Almighty has created men and women as equal partners in this worldly life, so that both may guide each other towards righteous behaviour that is pleasing to Him. To me, Islam focuses on both equality and equity because the fundamental aspect of being human affords both men and women equal rights, and yet their inherently different abilities afford them complementary and equitable roles and responsibilities.

Fourteen hundred years ago, Islam gave women the right to gainful employment, the right to vote, the right to own property and receive inheritance, the right to learn the Holy scriptures (which many other religions have forbidden to persons based on gender or caste), the right to demand divorce, the right to education, and the right to identity as a professional, a mother, a daughter, a sister, or an educator, amongst any myriad of identities. Most importantly, Islam gave women (and men) the right to choice.
